History & Heritage
The history of Rajasthan is a saga of legendary Rajput dynasties — the Kachwahas of Jaipur, the Rathores of Marwar (Jodhpur), and the Sisodias of Mewar (Udaipur). For centuries, these kingdoms constructed massive forts and palaces that served as centres of military power and arts. Jaipur was planned in 1727 as a commercial capital. Jodhpur, founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha, was a major hub on the trade routes connecting Delhi to the ports of Gujarat. Udaipur was established in 1553 by Maharana Udai Singh II as a more secure capital for Mewar after the siege of Chittorgarh. The state was formed by merging these princely kingdoms after 1947.
