About the Journey

Kainchi Dham, a serene ashram nestled in the Kumaon hills near Nainital, has become a global centre of spiritual awakening. Established in 1962 by the legendary mystic Neem Karoli Baba (affectionately known as Maharaj-ji), the ashram sits in a picturesque valley at the confluence of two hills, shaped like scissors (kainchi). Made famous globally by visits from tech pioneers Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, Kainchi Dham draws searchers from all walks of life seeking peace, clarity, and devotion. Our 3-day pilgrimage package from Kanpur combines a soul-stirring visit to Kainchi Dham with sightseeing in Nainital and the scenic lake district of Bhimtal, offering a perfect blend of inner peace and mountain beauty.

History & Heritage

Neem Karoli Baba was a wandering saint who performed miracles and taught the path of bhakti (devotion) through simple service (seva) and love. He established the Kainchi Dham Ashram in 1962 alongside the revered saint Sombari Maharaj. The ashram started with small shrines dedicated to Hanuman Ji and has grown into a well-organized sanctuary. Maharaj-ji left his physical form in 1973, but his presence is felt deeply by devotees who visit his samadhi temple here. The ashram became globally renowned when Apple founder Steve Jobs visited in the 1970s, and later Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg came in 2015, seeking spiritual direction.

Cultural & Spiritual Significance

Kainchi Dham is considered a living temple of Hanuman devotion. Neem Karoli Baba was believed by many of his followers to be an avatar of Lord Hanuman. The ashram's philosophy is simple: 'Sab Ek' (All is One) and 'Love everyone, feed everyone, serve everyone.' Unlike commercialized religious sites, the ashram maintains a strict meditative atmosphere where devotees can sit quietly, participate in bhajan singing, and receive Maharaj-ji's blessings. The energy here is described as deeply calming, helping visitors connect with their inner self.

Festivals & Culture

The Ashram Foundation Day (June 15) is the grandest festival, attracting over 200,000 pilgrims. The entire valley is decorated, and a massive bhandara (community feast) serves the famous potato-curry and puri prasad to all visitors. Hanuman Jayanti is also celebrated with devotional singing and special rituals.

Food & Cuisine

The ashram distributes simple, delicious khichdi or halwa prasad to visitors. In the surrounding market, try the Kumaoni aloo-gutke, fresh cucumber salad with mustard paste (pahadi raita), and hot ginger tea. Nainital and Bhimtal offer diverse dining options, from local thalis to continental cafés.

Shopping Souvenirs

Pick up spiritual books on Neem Karoli Baba (such as 'Miracle of Love' and 'Be Here Now'), framed photographs of Maharaj-ji, locket pendants, devotional music CDs, and pure locally sourced honey and fruit squashes from the hill cooperatives.

Weather & Climate

The ashram is accessible year-round. October to March offers cool, pleasant weather (5–20°C) ideal for meditation. April to June is warm but comfortable. Monsoon (July to September) brings heavy rains, which makes the valley lush and green but requires checking road conditions. Winters can be cold, so warm clothing is essential.

How to Reach from Kanpur
