History & Heritage
Ujjain, known as Avanti and Avantika in ancient texts, was one of ancient India's greatest cities — serving as the capital of Vikramaditya's empire and a centre of the Malwa Sultanate. It is referenced in the Meghaduta by Kalidasa and in the Skanda Purana. The Mahakaleshwar temple's origins date to the pre-Gupta era, though the current structure was rebuilt during the Maratha period. Omkareshwar's temple complex sits on Mandhata island and has been a pilgrimage site since at least the 12th century, with inscriptions from the Paramara dynasty.
