History & Heritage
According to the Mahabharata, Barbarika possessed three infallible arrows that could end any war. To prevent him from altering the destined outcome of the Kurukshetra battle, Krishna asked for his head as a guru-dakshina. Impressed by his sacrifice, Krishna blessed him, declaring that in Kaliyug, Barbarika would be worshipped as Shyam and his devotees would never go empty-handed. The head was found buried in Khatu village, and a temple was built in the early medieval period. The current grand temple structure was renovated in the 18th century.
