The Kashmir Valley has a rich history dating back to ancient times. Srinagar was founded by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, and the region became a major center for Sanskrit scholarship, Buddhism, and Hinduism (particularly Kashmir Shaivism). From the 14th century onwards, Islamic influences grew under local Sultanates and later the Mughal Empire.
